The Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM) has stressed that it views online child sexual exploitation seriously and will implement advocacy and awareness-raising programmes to educate parents of the threats of the cyber world. Its Minister, Datuk Seri Rina Harun in a statement yesterday said that the matter required the cooperation of all members of the community to safeguard the safety of children in our country.
The KPWKM Minister was responding to a report earlier this month on how the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) had received tens of thousands of internet protocol (IP) addresses in Malaysia suspected of sharing child pornography on the internet over the past several years. However, as we’ve reported previously, PDRM couldn’t investigate on all of the IP addresses due to the lack of manpower.
As reported by national news agency Bernama, KPWKM through the National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN) will be working together with CyberSecurity Malaysia for the aforementioned advocacy and awareness-raising programmes. After a visit to CyberSecurity Malaysia yesterday, Rina Harun said that many more collaborations will be carried out with CyberSecurity in order to provide a safe cyber environment for children.
The KPWKM Minister also revealed that she have had meetings and discussions on the matter with PDRM’s Sexual, Women and Children Crime Investigation Division (D11) on the matter. Moreover, she had also held similar discussions with the Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Integrated Action Committee on the Management of Child-related Issues on Social Media.
