A recon car sales advisor (SA) recently shared a brief WhatsApp conversation with a potential customer who wanted to buy a Mercedes GLA 2021, but there was one issue.

He only makes RM5,400 a month.

A recon car, also known as a reconditioned car, is a pre-owned vehicle that has undergone a thorough inspection and refurbishment process to bring it back to its original condition. In a viral Threads post, the SA, Paan, asked the man if he had a guarantor who earns more than him, to which the man suggested his wife.

Being a sales advisor, it was merely Paan’s duty to check the potential buyer’s income, so he asked the man about his wife’s income. However, the man was not happy about the questions.

“You don’t need to ask me too many questions. Fine, I’ll find another dealer.”

Paan then told the man that as a sales advisor, he was just trying to help.

The advisor tried to recommend more budget-friendly options

In a brief conversation with WORLD OF BUZZ, Paan said the man stopped responding after he explained himself.

“As a sales advisor, I wasn’t trying to be a busy body.”

“Even if he didn’t tell me, I would still need documents from him.”

Paan also told WORLD OF BUZZ that the car the man wanted would cost him approximately RM260,000. Paan tried to offer him something that was more suited to his budget after the man filled in his details but to no avail.

“Other sales advisor would have just proceeded, and the bank would reject eventually. This is time consuming.”

Paan also clarified that he did not mean you can’t have a luxury car with a RM5,000 monthly income.

“You need to make huge deposits to minimise your monthly installment. You also need to have a lot of savings for the maintenance. The insurance and roadtax alone for Mercedes can go up to RM7,000.”

Would you invest in a luxury car if you had the budget? To those with a luxury car, what advice do you have for those who dream of getting one?
