Netizens were furious after stumbling upon shocking posts from a Penang Hope Of Strays page showing a heart-wrenching incident of a puppy being dragged down the road while tied to the back of a moving car.
Since then, the posts have sparked a wave of anger and concern for the pup’s safety. In one of the updates, it was reported that after the owner had driven about 0.7 km from home, a passerby alerted him to the situation, prompting him to stop.
The owner claims he was unaware that the puppy was tied up
The incident was brought to the attention of Penang Hope of Strays, along with the person in charge of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) Seberang Prai and a volunteer, prompting them to visit the dog owner’s home.
After filing a report, a representative from Penang Hope of Strays visited the police station in Bukit Mertajam to meet with an inspector and discovered that the puppy’s owner was also there.
“The inspector showed me the puppy owner’s police report. He is the car owner, and the puppy belongs to his family. However, he claimed he was unaware that his cousin had tied the puppy to the back of his car. Someone alerted him about the puppy being tied, and when he stopped to see what was happening, he was shocked.”
The owner is willing to take full responsibility
Upon the puppy owner’s realising, he untied the puppy and later took it home and went to a pharmacy to buy some medication, planning to take it to the vet the next morning.
He expressed his deep regret and said that his whole family, especially his cousin, loves the puppy very much and that he was willing to take full responsibility and hopes to get the puppy back.
“I explained to him that the puppy is currently hospitalised, and due to the pain, the vet said an X-ray can only be done after the painkillers take effect tomorrow. The puppy is still not out of danger, and we must hope for the best,” said the representative.
SPCA is determining whether the puppy can be returned to its owner
The post further revealed whether the puppy will be returned to its owner depending on SPCA Seberang Prai’s decision.
At the police station, the representative put the inspector on speakerphone, allowing SPCA’s Richard (who works at a veterinary clinic in Penang) to weigh in.
Richard made it clear that the puppy would only be returned if they are confident the family could provide the proper care moving forward.
“Thank you all for your concern. We believe we now have sufficient funds to cover the puppy’s medical expenses, and the money collected will be handed over to SPCA. We’re deeply grateful for everyone’s support.”
The pup’s condition is stable!
The puppy’s condition is currently stable, with the main focus now on preventing infection. Because the wound cannot be stitched, it is being treated with a laser. Thanks to the public’s generous donations, the puppy is receiving top-notch medical care.
Now that the puppy is no longer in a life-threatening condition, the SPCA Seberang Prai representative will transfer the puppy to a veterinary clinic in Butterworth.
Netizens started flooding the comment section with their thoughts and reactions.
We’re so relieved to hear that the pup is in good hands and getting the care it needs!
