An unemployed father of 3 kids has pleaded not guilty to a charge of intentionally injuring his left eye to obtain an insurance claim worth RM1 million.

According to a report by Sinar Harian, 52-year-old Tan Kok Guan made the plea before Magistrate Siti Zulaikha Nordin@Ghani at the Magistrate’s Court today (December 30) in Butterworth, Penang.

Kok Guan, who is also a person with a disability (OKU), was accused of attempting to make a suspected false accident insurance claim application.

He was also charged with deceiving an insurance company into making a suspected false insurance claim and fraudulently inducing the company to deposit RM4,153.57 in cash into his bank account.

He allegedly committed these offences at Kampung Paya, Butterworth, between 9am and 6pm on June 8, 2023.

Kok Guan’s lawyer requested for the court to set a minimal bail amount as her client is unemployed and suffers from several chronic illnesses.

“My client is 52-years-old and has not worked since 2023. He is a disabled person, in which he is blind in his left eye. All family expenses are borne by his wife. He also suffers from heart disease and stroke,”

“My client has cooperated throughout his investigation. Therefore, please grant a minimum bail,” she said.

The case has since been adjourned until February for document review.
