Owners of People’s Housing Project (PPR) units, take note! If you “happen” to have sublet your unit then you should be worried. The Housing and Local Government Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin has warned PPR owners in a press conference today (June 5) that they will start evicting foreign tenants.

She said that owners will have 90 days from today to start eviction otherwise the ministry will have to forcibly remove them once the grace period is over, the Malay Mail reported. Don’t play play, okay? Public housing units are not allowed to be sublet and especially not to foreigners.

Owners may have their home ownership rights taken away if they refuse to evict their tenants, Zuraida said. “The priority has always been to provide affordable housing for Malaysians, which is clearly not happening in this case,” she added.

“We should also remember that foreigners living in PPR units generally come from countries poorer than ours, which can cause some social problems. There is a need for them to understand Malaysian culture and norms, so that they can live and work with as little trouble as possible among us,” she explained.

Enforcement operations are set to begin once the grace period is over, which will start with PPR homes followed by other sectors. Zuraida said that by removing foreigners from PPR units, this can also help the ministry regulate rental rates in the future.
