A renowned eatery in Penang is encouraging fellow food and beverage businesses to show compassion toward stray cats that frequent their premises.

Taking to their Facebook page, Nasi Kandar Sulaiman (NKS) highlighted the common sight of stray cats at restaurants and the hostility these animals often face.

“Cats and restaurants are inseparable. At many establishments, there will always be cats because they are looking for food,” they wrote.

“Whether or not food is provided is at the discretion of the restaurant owners. However, resorting to violence, such as beating them, is incredibly cruel. Sometimes, it is as if these animals are sent to us as a test of our character.”

Why not feed the cats?

The restaurant shared that they make a point of feeding the cats that beg at their premises, believing that such acts of kindness bring blessings to their business. They are now encouraging other eateries to follow suit.

“At NKS, whenever we see a cat asking for food outside the restaurant, we feed it immediately. We never chase them away by hitting them or splashing them with water,” they explained.

“When we proactively feed them outside, they don’t feel the need to enter the shop and disturb customers. NKS truly cares for these animals.”

The post concluded with a reminder about the welfare of animals during extreme weather:

“I believe that if we care for these cats, our business will be even more blessed, InshaAllah (God willing). Furthermore, during this intense heat, if we find our own thirst difficult to bear, imagine how it feels for a stray. If you cannot provide food, at least leave a container of water outside.”
