I’m sure by now many of you have heard that former prime minister Dato’ Seri Najib Razak is in Langkawi with his wife Rosmah Mansor for a holiday. He arrived there last Saturday (June 16) with 30 luggage bags, and is believed to be there until June 20.

This has raised a lot of speculation from the public who have expressed their concern that Najib might flee the country to other nearby nations. According to The Star, a netizen posted on Facebook claiming that Najib had rented a luxury yacht from the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club and was probably going to leave the country.

However, a spokesman for the yacht club denied that Najib had done so and urged the netizen to delete the post.

Another Facebook user called Huang Ung, had also asked the police to take steps to monitor Najib’s movement. According to New Straits Times, he claimed that Najib would use the sea route at Datai Resort, which was currently closed and under renovation, to travel to Myanmar before flying to China and proceeding to Kazhakstan, where his son-in-law is from.

Immediately after, the police came forward to urge Malaysians not to speculate or spread rumours that Najib is planning to flee the country through Langkawi.

Datuk Zainal Abidin Kasim, Kedah police chief, said that this would only lead to public unrest and anxiety.

“Why should he run away as he has not been found guilty? There has been no charges brought against him,” he said.

He then added that the police are well aware of Najib’s arrival on the island with his family members for a holiday.

“He (Najib) came to Langkawi just for a holiday with his family and met with former Kedah Menteri Besar (Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah) and other leaders. It’s just a regular visit and not a meeting. He has been playing golf on the island for two days,” he said.

However, netizens are still full of doubt that Najib is not just on a holiday. Many of them are still predicting that he will flee the country, and have urged the authorities to keep a close eye on him.
