Previously, we shared how Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim teased civil servants about an imminent salary increment by the end of the year, noting that the Federal Government will “find ways” to implement it.
True to his words, Anwar today announced an over 13% increment for civil servants in our country in his speech when officiating the National Labour Day 2024 celebration in Putrajaya.
RM10 billion allocated to implement the over 13% salary increase
The Prime Minister asserted that the over 13% salary increase will take place starting December this year and involves an allocation of over RM10 billion.
Anwar further noted that the increment is the highest and best in Malaysian history, asserting,
“The increase will be more than 13%… The best increase in history by the MADANI Government,”
Furthermore, Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, said that under the Public Service Remuneration System (SSPA) that’s being revised, the Federal Government will ensure that the minimum income for civil servants would exceed RM2,000 monthly.
This is a considerable change from the current overall minimum income of RM1,795, which includes salary and fixed allowances.
Sabah and Sarawak Governments will amend their respective labour ordinances
Besides that, the Prime Minister also announced that both the Sabah and Sarawak Governments have agreed to amend the Sabah Labour Ordinance and Sarawak Labour Ordinance to be in line with the Employment Act 1955 that’s applicable to Peninsular Malaysia.
He added that 2 separate bills for the amendments will be tabled in Parliament in the near future.
