Last weekend, Penang was hit by one of the worst floods in the state’s history. Thousands of people were displaced by floodwaters and 7 deaths have been recorded so far.

Sadly, many people lost their valuables and belongings to the raging floodwaters. However, this hawker from Taman Sentul Jaya, Seberang Perai managed to save one of her most valuable possessions before it got swept away by the water.

Ong, 53, told The Star that her single-storey home became flooded at around midnight on Sunday (5th November) after several hours of heavy rain. As the floodwaters began rushing into her home, RM11,000 worth of cash she had hidden under her bed was nearly washed away!

“The water was rushing in from everywhere, the front door and also my window. Within minutes, my whole house was filled with water,” she told the daily.

As she was moving all of her belongings out of the way, she noticed her money floating in the living room! Thankfully, she managed to collect all of the cash with some help from her daughter.

“I had kept the money in an envelope and put it under my bed after withdrawing it on Friday,” she explained.

“Usually, I would keep some money in my room. But after this incident, I dare not now. My daughter, who is 15, has also warned me not to do it anymore as it is my hard-earned money.”

We guess this is a good lesson for her to never keep such large amounts of cash in not-so-secure spots!

If you too, tend to keep a huge sum of cash at home, it’s probably better to keep them somewhere safer!
