The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has given an update on the suspected bomb found on kilometre 265 of the North-South Expressway (PLUS), confirming that the object was an 81mm mortar bomb categorised as an Unexploded Ordnance (UXO).

Speaking to Harian Metro, Perak Police Chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin revealed that the UXO has been safely destroyed and that the location is now safe for road users to use.

Noor Hisam added that the mortar bomb was destroyed by the Bomb Disposal Unit (UPB) of the Perak Police Contingent Headquarters (IPK), aided by the UPB of the Ipoh District Police Headquarters, without any unwanted incidents.

The UXO was detonated using a ‘high order’ bomb disposal technique using electricity.

Earlier, the mortar bomb was found by a highway maintenance supervisor during routine landscaping work, some 4km from the Menora tunnel at 9.30am today.

The man was clearing vegetation in the area when he spotted the object resembling a bomb and immediately alerted the PLUS highway patrol unit, which contacted the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM).

Authorities then temporarily closed off the location for safety purposes, which resulted in congestion of about 15km on the PLUS highway.

All lanes on the affected area were reopened to road users at around 3.44pm.
