If you are one of those people who like to “reserve” a parking spot by physically standing there then you better watch out! It looks like this practice is getting more rampant in Malaysia these days and people are getting frustrated with them.
Well, in case you didn’t know, doing this is actually illegal and the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has released a statement on their Facebook page recently to clear things up. They said that this is an action that is irresponsible, causes trouble for other people and could ultimately be dangerous for the “human parker” as well. Maybe some angry driver cannot tahan and run them over?
In their post, PDRM cautions anyone from doing so unless they are authorised personnel as this is known as “Unlawful interference and importuning” under Section 50(3) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
Based on that particular law, it is defined as, “If any person, otherwise than with lawful authority, remains on any road or at any parking place for the purpose of importuning any other person in respect of the watching or cleaning of a motor vehicle, or for the purpose of directing any driver of a motor vehicle in respect of parking on such road or at such place, he shall be guilty of an offence.”
In other words, that means if a normal citizen “reserves” parking spots without an actual vehicle then we are breaking the law. Do note that if you insist on doing so, you are liable to go to jail!
According to that same act under Section 119, PDRM explains that offenders who are found guilty can be fined a maximum of RM2,000 or face a maximum six months jail term. That’s not all, if you are a repeat offender, the punishment could be even more severe. Don’t play play ah!
So, do you still dare to “reserve” parking spots like that?
