A controversial speech by PAS Machang Youth delegate Mohd Sharif Mohd Azhari during the party’s 65th Muktamar (Annual General Assembly) for its youth wing yesterday (13 September) has been met with criticism from the public after he called the tragic Jalan Masjid India sinkhole incident as ‘divine retribution’ from Allah.

In a livestream of the event on Facebook, Sharif took the stage at around the 5-hour-9-minute mark and in the middle part of his speech, the PAS Machang Youth delegate elaborated on divine retributions from Allah, one of which included humans being ‘swallowed’ by the earth.

He then claimed that Malaysia had just experienced such a ‘divine retribution’ from Allah with the recent tragic Jalan Masjid India sinkhole incident in which up until today, the victim has yet to be found.

Sharif said that while we are sad about the tragedy as human beings, Malaysians should be aware that the incident was a ‘divine retribution’ from Allah.

The PAS Machang youth delegate associated the ‘divine retribution’ to the action of an unnamed Federal Territories Minister on land in Kuala Lumpur and referenced a National Geographic documentary which he claimed revealed that KLCC shouldn’t be built due to the land in the site.

Besides that, Sharif stressed that such divine retributions will continue if DAP’s ‘evils’ are not stopped.

Bangi MP slams Sharif for the controversial speech

Following the speech, the PAS Machang youth delegate received criticism from a majority of the public.

Among those who criticised him was Member of Parliament (MP) for Bangi Syahredzan Johan who said that Sharif’s action of linking the sinkhole tragedy to DAP was crossing the line.

Syahredzan asserted that no parties should exploit the tragedy, or any tragedies for that matter, to attack their political foes.

The Bangi MP added,

“As a young politician, he should’ve ushered in new politics that are healthy and conduct ‘check and balance’ to the Government.

“Unfortunately, PAS once again showed that they are stuck in old and extreme polemic and political rhetoric.”
