Nurul Izzah Anwar has shown that the support is clearly behind her, after being announced the winner in the race for PKR’s deputy president.
She beat the current holder of the post, Economy Minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli, in a head-to-head contest, getting 9,803 votes over Rafizi’s 3,866 votes.
Izzah was seen as the favourite for the role, especially after over 200 out of 222 PKR divisions backed her.
Speaking to reporters following the result, Nurul Izzah said that she’s focused on uniting the party and pushing for internal reforms as they gear up for the 16th general election.
She shared that her main goal is to bring everyone together and strengthen the party from within.
“I’m fully aware that a heavy responsibility lies ahead—not just for me, but for the entire team and the new leadership—as we prepare the party and our allies for the 16th General Election (GE16).”
“Next, I want to work on internal reforms and get ready for the next general election. Also, please keep us in your prayers—my husband and I will be heading to Mecca for Hajj after the party congress,” she said.
“We’ll begin our groundwork not just at the branch level, but also at the grassroots. The message from Datuk Seri President is clear—we need to ensure that the connection between the central leadership and grassroots members is strong. We must understand their situation and support them in whatever challenges they’re facing,” she added.
Izzah is expected to hold a press conference later today.
Meanwhile, Rafizi had previously said he was ready to step down as minister if he lost this deputy president race.
