High fashion is probably something that us, mere nobodies cannot comprehend and afford but recently, leading fashion houses have been designing items that have got us scratching our heads. The newest ‘it’ item that will be hitting the stores on September 21 is none other than Balenciaga’s Triple S sneakers.
When these sneakers were launched during Paris Fashion Week this year, they seem to really embody the concept of “ugly is cool” with their chunky appearance. Yeah, this is coming from the brand that came up with a few high fashion items we still don’t understand. Designed by Vetements designer Demna Gvasalia, High Snobiety says that Balenciaga describes them as “real, heavy-duty, high fashion-spec footwear”. Okay, if you say so.
However, taking a look at these shoes, one would be forgiven into thinking that these were some old sneakers that your dad had dug out from the back of the shoe closet. Even my dad’s sneakers look sleeker than this! Ugly and chunky sneakers aren’t something new but Balenciaga certainly takes this to the extreme.
Where do I even begin? First, the sneaker features a padded, triple-stacked sole that is created from molds taken from running, basketball and track shoes that is at least two inches tall. Meanwhile, the upper showcases pre-distressed details (read: grimy) with some heavy hiking laces. Guess you don’t have to worry about someone dirtying your shoes! Oh, and they cost a cool $795 (approx. RM3,339). They’re unisex too. 😉
GQ reports that not only does the shoe look clunky, but if you have bigger feet, it will make you look like you are wearing clown shoes. The recent news of these shoes arriving in Balenciaga stores have inspired a lot of responses from netizens.
Here are some of them:
Guess it’s trendy to look like an unfashionable uncle these days! Perhaps it’s time to raid my dad’s closet for fashion ideas!
