Michelle Yeoh’s recent major victory in the Oscars excited fans worldwide, but it seems that many want a piece of her now.

Back in January, a Hong Kong politician addressed Michelle Yeoh as a Hong Kong actress, and HK actor Chapman To was quick to remind his government yesterday (March 13) and said that Michelle Yeoh is a Malaysian. Now, it seems that some netizens in China are “claiming” that Michelle Yeoh hails from their country.

Is everyone, everywhere claiming Michelle Yeoh all at once?

“The 1st actress from China wins an Oscar! Hooray!”

According to UDN.com, soon after the news about Michelle’s victory in Oscar, some netizens were quick to “claim” her as part of them. One of the comments congratulated Michelle for winning an Oscar and becoming the first actress from China to do so.

Another comment said, “A historical win. Congratulations”.

HK01, on the other hand, reported that some netizens from China also took the opportunity to remind others that Michelle Yeoh is not of China origin but from Malaysia.

Yesterday, not long after Chapman To “reminded” his government about their past mistakes in addressing Michelle Yeoh, Hong Kong’s Culture, Sports, and Tourism secretary Kevin Yeung once again, congratulated the Ipoh-born actress for her major success in Oscar and said that she deserved the victory.

But that was not all.

“Her success has shown the strength of the actors, as well as the entertainment industry in Hong Kong. Michelle used to star in many Hong Kong-produced films in the past.”

We guess Chapman’s reminder has jinxed it.

Michelle Yeoh won the Best Actress Award for her role as Evelyn, a Chinese-American immigrant in Everything Everywhere all at Once. The film itself has won a total of 7 categories in the Oscars, and the 95th Academy Award is marked as a significant night for many Asian actors in the Hollywood industry.

Who do you think will try to claim Michelle next?
