Disgraced former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, through his lawyer, has requested for the documentary; Man On The Run, to be taken down from Netflix.
The documentary, which was directed, written and produced by Cassius Michael Kim, revolves around Jho Low and the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal, was released in October 2023 and featured an interview with Najib where he denied his involvement in the scandal.
In a press conference shared to Najib Razak’s Facebook page, his lawyer, Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, claimed that the documentary was very subjudicial to his client as the 1MDB trial is still ongoing and the prosecution is bound by the responsibility to take immediate action.
“The program is very subjudicial and in contempt of court. More seriously, former Attorney General Tommy Thomas also took part, making conclusions outside the court.”
“Clare Rewcastle also issued various statements, mentioning US$681 million (RM3,160,521,000) that was allegedly stolen but did not mention that US$621 million (RM2,882,061,000) had been returned and various statements against Najib, including that Najib will take any action against anyone who opposes him,” he explained.
He added that he would file an application to continue the committal proceedings (contempt of court) against Sarawak Report editor, Clare Rewcastle-Brown and former Attorney-General, Tan Sri Tommy Thomas, in regards to their statements in the documentary.
Muhammad Shafee will also be writing letters to both MCMC as well as the Ministry of Home Affairs (KDN) in regards to this.
“The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Home Ministry have the authority to take it (the documentary) off the air,” he said.
