Fans of both Henry Cavill and Superman, we have bad news for you.
Back in late October, Henry Cavill personally confirmed that he would be back as the Man of Steel, after his surprise appearance in the mid-credits scene of Black Adam. Unfortunately, that will not be the case anymore.
Just this morning (December 15), in his Instagram post, Henry officially announced that his time to put on the cape has passed and that he’s DONE playing Superman on the big screen.
Why the sudden change?
Filmmaker James Gunn was hired as the President of the DC Studios last month to oversee the upcoming productions of DC movies and television shows. For that, he’s also tasked to work on a 10-year master plan of DC movies and TV shows with co-President, Peter Safran, which has now been completed.
Henry revealed that following the meeting with Gunn and Safran, who were hired after he announced his return, the heads of the studios “have a universe to build” which Henry respects.
“I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes,” Henry expressed.
He also took the opportunity to thank his fans who have been supporting him throughout the years and despite his exit as the Man of Steel, Superman is still around.
“Everything he stands for still exists, and the examples he sets for us are still here.”
While his time to play the character has passed, Henry said “what Superman stands for never will”.
At the time of writing, Gunn has yet to reveal the details of his master plan, but in his tweet this morning, he revealed that he’s in the midst of writing a Superman film that will center on the character’s younger days, and it WON’T be played by Henry.
Gunn also confirmed that the new Superman movie will not be an origin film.
Among those on the slate is Superman. In the initial stages, our story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman's life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill.

Henry first played Superman in 2013’s Man of Steel, and later in its sequel Batman V Superman, which was released in 2016. Five years later, Henry returned as Superman in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, before eventually playing the character again in Black Adam.
It looks like Gunn and Safran are “rebooting” the DC movies, and as heartbroken as we are about Henry’s departure from the character, we’re still excited to see how the plan lays out. Fans of comic book movies, are you a fan of these major changes?
