A Malaysian man who calls himself a “broke guy” caught the attention of netizens recently after sharing his discovery of a new, affordable source of protein: a can of sardines he bought at a local grocery store for just RM4.

In the photos he shared on Reddit, the canned sardines are served in tomato sauce. While they’re still a good source of protein, Redditors weighed in with other protein-packed options, warning that consuming canned food daily is not a good idea.

Based on the label, the canned sardines provide 28 grams of protein per 100-gram serving. Canned sardines are a staple ingredient in many households, and not only are they inexpensive, but they’re also packed with protein.

On top of that, canned sardines also have a long shelf life, with the recommended shelf life at around three years, according to Food & Wine.

“The nutritional information might not be accurate as some details are missing”

One netizen pointed out that crucial nutrient information, such as the sodium and sugar content, is absent from the can. The man who bought the food was also sceptical about the fish’s protein content, but clarified that he was full after finishing the entire can.

Another netizen reminded the man about the health risk, claiming that many Malaysians are diagnosed with cancer due to the preservatives in canned fish.

Meanwhile, other social media users suggested chicken breast as an alternative and reminded him about the hidden sugar content in the can.

So, what are the other alternatives?

While a few options may be slightly more expensive, here are some other high-protein foods you can consider if you’re looking to cut back on canned fish.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, protein-rich options include edamame, tempeh, lean beef, and salmon.

If you’re a health enthusiast, what else can you suggest for protein intake?
