It’s no secret that Health Director-General, Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham, is widely respected by both members of the public and his colleagues in government. However, it seems as though respect isn’t the only impression government officials have of him.

“Getting a message from the Health Director-General, Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham about the statistics of daily Covid-19 cases makes me scared and my heart will start pounding,” said Defence Minister, Ismail Sabri to Astro Awani when asked how the experience of being an important figure amidst the battle against Covid-19 for over a year in this country has felt like.

But what scares the Defence Minister, even more, is when he receives information that the recorded cases and deaths for the day reach high, alarming figures. “Of course I am the most fearful because it is my job to break the chain of Covid-19 infection.”

“So if [you] ask about frightening experiences, it is related to seeing messages that say the daily cases and deaths are increasing at a dangerous rate. This is hard for me to forget,” he said during a special media briefing in conjunction with the celebration of the anniversary of Malaysia Prihatin on Monday (1 March).

He added that he takes the responsibility of breaking the Covid-19 chain as a very serious responsibility given to him.

Meanwhile, when asked for comment about the negative things netizens are saying concerning his multiple batik shirts that make an appearance during the daily live press conferences by the National Security Council, Ismail Sabri said such comments do not affect him.

“I’ve received an abundance of experience, both praises and insults. Those who support us, even when I’m not wearing the right outfit, for them, it’s still good. And vice versa, if those who do not support us raise many issues.”

Ismail Sabri said he reads netizens’ comments and tries to make every effort to improve the SOPs that have been standardised.
