Muar Judge Reduces Sentence of M’sian Father Who Stole Bananas to 10 Days in Jail

Recently, a single father in Johor was sentenced to 3 months in jail after he had stolen a bunch of bananas from a 56-year-old man’s garden.

Now, according to a report by Berita Harian, the Muar High Court has set aside the 3-month jail sentence imposed on him, who is a widower, after he pleaded guilty to stealing a bunch of bananas last Wednesday.

Judge Datuk Meor Hashimi Abdul Hamid, instead, replaced the sentence with a 10-day jail sentence starting from the date of his arrest, which was on January 4. 

 

The sentence is too harsh

In a summary judgment, Meor Hashimi said the 3-month jail sentence imposed on the accused, 35-year-old Muhammad Fadil Ismail, by the Batu Pahat Magistrate’s Court, was too harsh.

“The court believes that the decision made by the Magistrate is not in line with the offence committed by the accused,”

“Therefore, the Court has decided that the sentence (of 3 months’ imprisonment) be set aside and the accused be imprisoned for 10 days from the date of arrest,” he argued in the judicial review proceedings.

With the decision made by the High Court, Muhammad Fadil was released yesterday (January 13).
