M’sians Angered by Motorcyclists ‘Policing’ Emergency Lanes, While Not Knowing it’s a SMART LANE!

Something that many might not know is that emergency lanes at PLUS highways have been converted to SMART LANES during certain hours. There will be signboards on these highways to indicate the start of the SMART LANE, during the SMART LANE, as well as where it ends (so you’ll have to move out of the emergency lane).

With many not knowing this, motorcyclists have taken it upon themselves to act as ‘police’ to shoo cars out of the emergency lane while it is still a SMART LANE.

The MALAYSIA MOST VIRAL Twitter page recently shared dashcam footage from a car that was using an emergency lane while it is still a SMART LANE. Suddenly, a motorcycle overtook the car from the left and berated the driver for being in the emergency lane.

MALAYSIA MOST VIRAL wrote, “Even I don’t understand this anymore. Are we truly allowed to use the SMART LANE? We’re constantly getting scolded by motorcyclists when we use this lane.”

In the video, after the motorcyclist had scolded the car driver and rode off, a signboard could be seen by the side of the road indicating that they were, in fact, in the SMART LANE which can be used by vehicles.

The signboard stated that the SMART LANE is active from Friday to Sunday, and public holidays, from 8am to 10pm. A quick look at the dashcam’s time stamp shows that the incident took place when the SMART LANE was active.

Do motorcyclists really don’t know about SMART LANES?

For those who still do not understand how to identify SMART LANES, PLUS Malaysia Berhad took to their Twitter page earlier this year to explain it.

They basically showcased the signboards that indicate the start, the middle and the end of the SMART LANE, as well as how vehicles using the SMART LANE should behave.

Smart Lane 1

“Drive carefully and respect other road users,” they wrote.

With that being said, the motorcyclist’s actions angered Malaysians as this isn’t the first time a motorcyclist has acted as ’emergency lane police’ while they themselves are not supposed to be using the emergency lane should it not be a SMART LANE.

Smart Lane 2

“I’ve experienced this many times, like everything is wrong. I think that SMART LANES need to be painted in a different colour and have the words ‘SMART LANE’ written on the road.”

Smart Lane 3

“The motorcyclist is stupid. Actually, no vehicles can use the emergency lane except for ambulances, BOMBA and law enforcement if the lane is not being used as a SMART LANE. This includes motorcycles.”

Smart Lane 4

“I feel like motorcyclists are not smart in reading signboards. They’re just smart in kicking side mirrors.”

Smart Lane 5

“It’s simple. If they’re already stupid, no matter how many signboards you install, they’ll still be stupid. This kind of people are road gangsters who I am lazy to entertain.”

You can check out the video of the incident here.

Have you ever encountered a motorcyclist trying to shoo you away from a SMART LANE? Do feel free to share your experiences in the comment section.
