A 26-year-old Malaysian woman recently lost her job and had her car towed by the bank. Intending to hide her financial woes from her parents, the woman sought help from loan sharks, but the situation escalated.
The woman was forced to send nudes to get her loan approved, only for the loan sharks to ask for more.
In a press conference with the Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) yesterday (May 13), the woman said she encountered the loan sharks’ advertisement and contacted them via WhatsApp to borrow only RM3,000. She was asked to fill in her details and pay a “RM1,000 fee.”
She was baffled by the fee, but out of desperation, she borrowed RM1,000 from her friend and remitted the money to the loan sharks in two instalments, which they did not accept.
“They told me they only accept one lum sump payment, and the RM1,000 that I had paid would not be counted.”
Knowing that the victim ran out of funds, they asked her for nudes, to which the victim unwillingly sent a nude photo showing the top half of her body.
The loan sharks demanded more
The loan sharks were still not satisfied and wanted more, so they asked for a full-body photo, which she also sent. Still, the loan sharks asked for more.
“I was asked to issue a lawyer’s letter and pay an additional RM1,500 fee. This time, I told them I didn’t want the loan anymore.”
When the victim rejected the loan, the loan sharks asked for RM1,800 as the cancellation fee, prompting the victim to stop responding.
Due to this, the loan sharks threatened to leak her pictures online if she insisted on skipping the cancellation fee.
Fearing for her safety, the victim lodged a police report at the Brickfields Police Station and reached out to MCA for help.
