This is just too sad!

According to the New Straits Times, 21-year-old Ooi Jia Li was driving to class on Monday morning (23rd April) when the unthinkable happened.

After stopping at a red light, the second year Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) student reportedly passed out in her car and did not move when the traffic light turned green.

After a few moments of staying stationary, police officers went over to Jia Li’s car to check on her and found her lying unconscious, according to Arau police chief Superintendent Nanda Maarof. She did not respond after they knocked on her window and tried shaking the car. After realising she was unresponsive, they proceeded to push her car to the side of the road and called an ambulance.

“The victim was subsequently rushed to the Tuanku Fauziah Hospital in an ambulance,” the police chief told the daily.

“However, at 10.30am, we received a call from the hospital staff saying that the victim had died. It is believed that she passed away due to heart complications.”

Jia Li, who was studying biomedical engineering, was supposed to be in class that morning but did not turn up, worrying her course mates. Her brother, Ooi Jun Hao, told the daily,

“They wanted to know if she was unwell but their calls went unanswered until someone picked up her phone and informed them that she was sent to the hospital after being found unconscious in her car.”

“Unfortunately, not long after that, I received another call from her course mate informing me the shocking news that my sister had passed away. I immediately alerted my parents in Kuala Sanglang as I’m staying in Penang.”

Jia Li’s brother was finding it difficult to process her sudden death since she was so fit. The 21-year-old was very active in sports and was reportedly part of UniMAP’s 4×400 metre relay team. She also did taekwondo.

Let’s all take this as a lesson to never take our health for granted. Our condolences go out to Jia Li’s family and friends, and we hope they can remain strong during this tough time.
