According to The Star, Soares Chen grew up in Penang lives and works in Germany but had travelled to China to celebrate Chinese New Year with his wife’s family.
Chen took the flight to China before the news of human to human transmission of the virus came out. Although the news came out upon their arrival in Wuhan, the family decided to face it with a calm and rational manner.
Chen said “When the city lockdown was announced, I understand the rationale of an attempt to contain the outbreak. Despite doubting its effectiveness, I still believed in the risk of leaving the city out of panic.”
Chen decided to go along with the lockdown rules, believing there would be risk leaving the country in panic. He added that “since the lockdown, everyone is trapped at home and has no idea what is happening in the city.
Chen also expressed his concern for the incompetency the local government handling the outbreak. The local news has also been less informative about what is going on in the city as rumours pile up.
The Star also reported that Chen could not verify the shortage of food supplies and people panicking to stock up on food as he doesn’t go to the market.
