Love alone isn’t always enough to sustain a relationship, and one man spent five years learning that painful lesson before ending a relationship that, in his words, should never have started.

A Malaysian man recently revealed that he had been in a long-term relationship with a married woman who was separated from her husband but had not yet divorced. According to her, she wanted the divorce, but her husband refused to proceed.

The man, who was working in Singapore, began getting intimate with the woman five years ago during the COVID-19 Movement Control Order (MCO). She was based in Johor, and the two frequently tagged each other in random Facebook posts.

Eventually, the woman asked him to keep their social media interactions private, as her husband had started noticing them.

Jealousy took over

Despite not being officially divorced, the two entered into a relationship. After the MCO was lifted, the man returned to Malaysia and they began seeing each other in person. However, cracks soon began to show in the forbidden relationship.

The woman became increasingly jealous and controlling, she demanded that the man unfollow all women on Instagram and restricted who he could talk to. She would even get upset if he didn’t inform her about going out for meals with his family. Yet when the man asked for the same transparency from her, she ignored him.

One thing remained unchanged: her marital status.

“It’s not that I don’t want to divorce. He just doesn’t want to face it,” she told him.

Although the man had tried to end the relationship earlier, the woman begged him to stay and asked for more time to “sort things out.”

Just a backup plan

Throughout the five years of their discreet relationship, the man was never introduced to her family. He eventually realised he was just a backup plan. One day, he asked her:

“Aren’t you afraid of having fun out here when you’re not even divorced?”

The woman simply responded with, “As long as I’m happy, then that’s all that matters.”

Feeling invisible and emotionally drained, the man decided to end the relationship after hearing her casual reply.

In his anonymous confession shared on Facebook via XUAN, he left a parting message to his ex-girlfriend in Johor:

“I hope you can have a proper meal, and not keep having ‘discreet meals’ everywhere.”
