Unique food combinations are not uncommon in Malaysia, considering the various backgrounds a plethora of cuisines come from. With that being said, do we always need to embark on tasting diverse food variations?
Malaysian influencer and TikTok creator Tan Jia Song recently decided to try a series of interesting food combinations, sharing the experience to his account @jia_songg. Eating 6 different items in total, Tan revealed how some wild combinations actually weren’t completely unpleasant.
Beginning with Sirap Telur Mata, Tan proceeded to try a drink which consisted of a fried egg mixed in syrup water. Including the runny egg yolk, Tan was forthright with the fact that upon drinking the syrup initially, he could not taste the egg. However, after picking the fried egg up and eating it straight from his cup, he did no portray a pleasant reaction.
Moving forward with Tom Yum Teh Tarik, Tan stated that while it may look scary at first glance, it tasted like regular teh tarik, just with a hint of spice. A similar critique was given to the third dish he tried, Roti Ular. According to the influencer, it tasted like baked roti canai.
However, one item that caught Tan by surprise was Maggi Pizza, which essentially consisted of maggi goreng layered inside baked bread.
“The combination of the noodles and bread actually fits so perfect, I swear it’s so nice!” said Tan in the TikTok video.
Towards the end of the video, Tan concluded his tasting session with Maggi Milo Ayam Goreng, which he alluded to as being his favourite of the night. His final dish was Sirap Fried Rice, which essentially infused the condiment into regular fried rice.
“It actually tastes like normal fried rice, just with some aroma of syrup in it,” added Tan.
Garnering a wide response from many Malaysians, multiple people said these dishes could not be intended as serious food, due to how polarising the combinations were.
“If you eat this, I can confirm that you will fly to the moon,” jokingly wrote one user in reference to flatulence.
Aside from that, one user also opined that Maggi Pizza was the only dish they felt was edible.
