It’s a big milestone when one finally decides to buy a house and turn it into a home. But, of course, there are lots of things to consider before settling with a property that satisfies all your wants and needs.
Recently, a Malaysian reader reached out to WORLD OF BUZZ to share his story after encountering a tough moment when looking for a property. But it wasn’t the property itself that was giving him a hard time, the difficult moment he faced was when a property agent made fun of him and his financial situation.
Looking for a home under RM600k
Speaking to WORLD OF BUZZ, Mo (not his real name) said he reached out to an agent from a property agency he found online.
“I was looking for a house and came across an agent’s contact number from a website. I told her my expectations or, better said, my requests, regarding the ideal property I am looking for.
The agent did come up with a few suggestions, which I mentioned I was not interested in. She still pushed further, and when I asked her if there is a corner lot within RM600k and below, she posed a comment and question which I found to be very derogatory,” Mo explained.
“You want to buy a home for RM100 per month?”
Mo shared the screenshots of the conversation exclusively with WORLD OF BUZZ and here is how it went down.
“I called her to clarify why she said such a thing”
According to Mo, he was stunned by her comments, specifically “Are you looking for a property about RM100 a month?” and “Tell faith with you only.”
“Upon calling her to clarify why and what made her say such a thing to me, she went on laughing and said I’m being too funny for saying that the price is expensive for me.
When I said she shouldn’t have done that and it is definitely not the right thing for her to do being an agent, she went on laughing and said if I can’t afford to buy a house, then don’t look for one,” Mo told WORLD OF BUZZ.
Mo emailed the agency to file a complaint. He received a reply from them on 17 June asking for more details. When he provided these details, he did not hear from them again.
He added, “I don’t think it is wrong for me to look for a corner lot priced at not more than RM600k, as I did make my request very clear to her from the beginning.
If she can’t meet the request or does not have details with any other developments, she could have been honest about it or told me that she is unable to provide the service, right?”
“I felt so embarrassed, to be honest, and agitated at the same time. I had to block her because I couldn’t afford to let her make fun and “bully” me emotionally.
Everybody is going through our own issues and we are dealing with our dilemma in different ways.”
WORLD OF BUZZ reached out to the agent
WORLD OF BUZZ reached out to the agent for a statement this afternoon (23 June). Here is her reply:
“Because he wants to use RM1,000 (monthly) to buy a corner lot. So, I had to directly say that to him,” she told WORLD OF BUZZ.
“I am a good property agent, but please don’t try to use RM1,000 monthly instalment to find a corner lot. But, for an intermediate lot, double-storey landed property and freehold unit, still can,” she added.
However, according to Mo, he did not ask her such a thing.
“Even in a kampung area, you can’t get that price, or even for a lelong house. I can’t be that inconsiderate to seek for that kind of arrangement, as in RM1,000 for a corner lot,” he explained.
However, when WORLD OF BUZZ asked if the property agent had proof that Mo requested a price of RM1,000 for a corner lot, she failed to provide evidence that such a discussion had ever occurred.
The property market can be a tricky field to navigate so do be wary of who you meet when you’re trying to purchase or rent a place.
UPDATE: The agent has reached out to WORLD OF BUZZ today evening (24 June) to issue a public apology in regards to her actions which she deeply regrets.
Here is her apology:
The agent told WORLD OF BUZZ she would also like to apologize to the client and hopes to seek his forgiveness.
Mo too has reached to WORLD OF BUZZ to inform us that the agency has apologized to him and agreed that the agent’s actions were unacceptable.
