As Malaysians, we’re proud of our country when we make international headlines for the right reasons. Unfortunately, that isn’t always the case when Malaysians receive global recognition.
Recently, an Australian newspaper known as, The West Australian, called former Malaysian Prime Minister, Najib Razak, a “Plundering Idiot” in big, bold letters in the headline of an article.
The newspaper was referring to Najib’s most recent court trial, in which he was convicted for seven charges including the abuse of power and laundering money in relation to the IMDB scandal. The paper commented on how the ruling would strengthen the credibility of the current Prime Minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who was reportedly fired as Najib’s deputy five years ago when he spoke out on the 1MDB scandal.
The netizen who shared the headline posted about it on subtle malaysian traits. And needless to say, Malaysians were able to recount other times the former Prime Minister was featured on worldwide media coverage:
Sadly, this isn’t the first time our country has made international headlines for the wrong reasons. Earlier this year, the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM) received global recognition by renowned content-creating platform, Buzzfeed, for asking women to not nag and “ask their husbands to do their chores in Doraemon’s voice”!
What else have Malaysians made headlines for?
