The Royal Malaysia Police have been battling the war against drugs for years, but little did we know that 2019 would become the year that drugs would win the battle – to a certain extent.
How, you ask?
Because according to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) of Malaysia Abdul Hamid Bador, their weekly arrests of drug addicts include their own police officers!
“We can see addicts not only among civilians but also my own men. Every week, we arrest our own men who are high on meth and syabu,” he said after the launch of the Autism: Royal Malaysia Police Guidelines roadshow as reported by Malay Mail.
Shockingly, 30 police officers have already been arrested for using drugs so far this year.
Hamid also revealed that Malaysia is becoming such a hub for narcotics that it could possibly become as bad as countries like Colombia.
“Drug abuse in the country is at a breaking point and if we do not check it now, it will be at the level of what we can find in Colombia. That is how bad it is,” he added, as they’ve seen an increased number of drug production facilities in Malaysia.
Hamid, along with the government, is now considering more holistic approaches towards policing the drug trade, though he admits that his police force’s current resources may no longer be sustainable in drug law enforcement.
Police have seen an increase in drug seizures over the years though, substances seem to still be largely distributed despite the authority’s crackdowns.
“We are very serious, we cannot go on with operation after operation, my men are so tired,” he said.
