There seems to be an increasing trend of holding graduation ceremonies for schoolchildren in luxurious hotels, which is becoming burdensome for parents.

In the past week, a parent took to TikTok to talk about how they had to fork out an extra RM200 for their child to attend the graduation.

As this issue is now viral, the Ministry of Education (MOE) has said that schools are encouraged to hold their graduation ceremonies in a simple and lively manner to celebrate all their students.

Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said that the basis of graduation ceremonies at respective schools should be made during discussions with students’ parents and the Parents and Teachers Association (PTA).

“Discussion and consultation with the PTA is very important and must be completed at the school level. If there are objections, it must be taken into consideration.”

According to BERNAMA, Melaka’s Department of Education had issued a directive featuring a set of guidelines for organising graduation ceremonies for students at the school level. This is done in order not to add extra burden to parents.

The cost of living is increasing, and parents already have enough on their plate. Forking a few hundred for a one-time thing is certainly not a very good idea. What are your thoughts on this? Let us know in the comments.
