One of our favourite ways to enjoy our time is to watch movies, and with so many different types of movies available on the silver screen nowadays, it’s no wonder we’re often spoilt for choice!
However, you may have to think carefully about choosing what movies to watch next time because a certain politician has said that some films are contributing to the increase of babies born out of wedlock in Malaysia. No, really.
According to The Star, it appears that films from the West that feature liberal and open lifestyles are influencing us to have lots of illegitimate babies, a PAS MP said. Datuk Dr Khairuddin Aman Razali (PAS – Kuala Nerus) raised this issue during the Budget 2018 allocation debate to the Communications and Multimedia Ministry in Parliament on Monday.
He feels that the National Film Development Corporation Board (Finas) isn’t doing enough to censor these films and wants them to tighten the system so that films that promote a hedonistic lifestyle will not be shown here.
He said, “How well does Finas, in its censorship process, handle the issue of Western films with extreme sexual elements? There are films rated 18SX which have sexual elements that are not extreme, but I fear the phenomenon of extreme films will contribute to more children born out of wedlock.”
“Western films have a tendency to normalise children born out wedlock, living together before marriage as well as atheism, which is not suited to our culture and norms,” Khairuddin said. Thanks for the heads-up, though!
Here’s what some netizens said about this statement:
Looks like some of the social ills in our country isn’t entirely caused by watching movies though, minister!
