Many of us are guilty of using our phones while we’re on the toilet even though we know it is actually very bad for us. Well, maybe after hearing this story, you may not want to use your phone while you’re on the toilet anymore.
According to Daily Mail, a Chinese man’s rectum had slipped out of his anus whilst he was on the toilet. The man had rushed to the hospital at midnight after realising that a mysterious ball-sized lump had fallen out of his anus. Yikes!
The man, whose identity remains anonymous, was reportedly sitting on the toilet for 30 minutes straight, playing games on his phone. This is why we shouldn’t be too preoccupied while doing our business!
He was later treated by Dr Su Dan from the gastrointestinal surgery division of the Sixth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, China. According to the doctor, the man was in severe condition.
The doctor told reporters that the man was diagnosed with a rare condition called rectal prolapse, a condition whereby the last part of one’s intestines that had lost its attachment to the body becomes visible from outside the body.
“The patient has had rectal prolapse since he was four years old, but the bulge was able to retract in the past,” she said.
However, although he has had the condition since he was a child, the prolapse was caused by the long duration spent on the toilet. As the patient was trying to defecate, his pelvic muscles had reportedly weakened, thus causing his rectum to slip out, she explained.
Dr Lv, a colleague of Dr Su, said that whether one is sitting or squatting over a toilet, the pressure in the abdomen will build up; this forces the rectum to stick out as the pelvic muscles are not strong enough to hold. Thus, those diagnosed with this condition should do the ‘number 2’ ASAP!
As for the man, thankfully, despite his severe condition, the surgeons had successfully removed the lump from the man on the same day he was admitted and he is now recovering. Phew!
Well, now we know why we should not spend too much time on the toilet!
