A 22-year-old Malaysian student studying in Sydney, Australia died on 6th August after falling off an apartment building.

Amirul Ashraff Md Azhar, from Taiping, Perak, was a final year student at the University of Technology Sydney doing Mechatronic Engineering, and was previously a student at Langkawi Mara Junior Science College (MRSM).

According to Malaysiakini, Amirul Ashraff is one of the sponsored students of Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA), who confirmed his death yesterday morning (6th August) and contacted the student’s father at 4pm.

“I was told that my son fell from his apartment, located about five kilometres from the university,” Amirul’s father, Md Azhar Hasbullah, 48, said.

“I’m still waiting for further details from MARA, as he is a MARA student.”

Md Azhar said that Amirul was facing difficulties in his studies and had failed five subjects, reported NST.

“My son had already submitted an appeal to MARA. I feel that he was under a lot of pressure. He did not tell me of any other problems apart from having failed the five subjects,” he said, adding that the last time he spoke to his son was on 30th July, on his birthday.

According to a statement released by MARA, Amirul died after slipping and falling from his apartment building. This information was obtained from Sydney authorities.

“MARA officers in Australia had rushed to the scene as soon as they were informed of the incident, and identified the remains,” the statement said.

“MARA, with help from the embassy, will ensure that the remains are returned to Malaysia as soon as the post-mortem examination is completed. We will handle the process of bringing his remains home until he is handed over to his family for burial.”

“MARA extends its condolences to the family of Allahyarham Amirul Ashraff.”

RIP Amirul Ashraff 🙁
