Nasi Lemak is basically the epitome of Malaysia. Why else would it be named as Malaysia’s national dish?
And while we’ve heard of the nasi lemak cake awhile back, 25-year old Melissa Tan Chia Hui recently created a nasi lemak flavoured ice-cream that became a hit among Malaysians.
Although the dessert may sound a little bizarre, this graduate from Middlesex University, London successfully created this innovative product which will be sold under the brand name ‘Skream Softserve’.
Besides Nasi Lemak flavour, she even has the CNY special Kuih Kapit flavour, Creamy Chocolate and Uji Matcha flavour as well!

On the first day, she managed to sell 30 cups of the ice-cream, but the number eventually grew to 144 a day! Each cup is priced at RM10.
The young entrepreneur is determined to leave her graphic design career in Penang to concentrate on her products.
Of course, no business comes without any hardship. Melissa had to face a string of negative comments, hate and criticism for her unique product. However, she will not let them get the best of her.
“This is not a gimmick and I am not a hipster trying to seek attention.
“My aim is to produce something delicious, get people to like it and finally agree that this really is nasi lemak ice-cream,” she told Bernama.
“Although there is no rice served, the main nasi lemak condiments such as peanuts, anchovies, ‘sambal’, quail eggs and cucumber will be sprinkled over the nasi lemak ice-cream.”
Melissa took about 3 months to create this recipe and do her extensive research to perfect the flavour.
“All the ingredients are fresh and free of preservatives and chemicals.” she said.
Of some of the ingredients used are lemongrass and coconut milk.
“I received a lot of negative comments over social media.
“To those who say that I am crazy and my product is disgusting, why not have a taste of it before judging.”
So, don’t knock something until you’ve tried it!
Skream Softserve is located at 44, Jalan Penjara Lama, Pekan Cina, Alor Setar.
Besides ice-cream, our nasi lemak seem to be inspiring other amazing products, even internationally.
