Malaysians have always been vocal about how rapidly the prices of goods are increasing, so much so that many people have to stretch their wallets thin to afford meals not just for themselves but also for their families.
Though, based on one man’s opinion, it appears that Malaysians are only feeling the pinch because they are poor.
The #UpdateInfo Twitter page recently showcased footage of a local entrepreneur telling a group of people that Malaysians only feel things are expensive because they don’t have money. He added that if Malaysians did have money, they wouldn’t feel like things are expensive.
“Things are expensive (to you) because you don’t have money. If you have money, everything becomes cheap,” the entrepreneur casually said.
According to a report by Kosmo, the man is allegedly an entrepreneur of a direct sales company and said what he did when asked by other entrepreneurs to share what he would tell his staff to motivate them.
“It’s not about the price of things, it’s because you don’t have money,”
“There are no items that are considered expensive, you know? It’s because you don’t have money that you feel they are expensive. If you had money, you would feel that items are cheap. RM1,000? It’s cheap lah! RM10,000? It’s cheap lah! RM100,000? It’s cheap lah! RM1 million? It’s cheap! Why? Because you have RM100 million,” he said.
The entrepreneur also added that his opinion on this matter is relative.
His opinion didn’t exactly sit well with people as they went on to condemn him for being out of touch.
“He can talk like that because he has a lot of money. If he was a regular person, he too would question why items are expensive. Even basic necessities are expensive.”
“It’s because our income has been stagnant from 1987 until 2024, automatically everything becomes expensive. If our income increases along with the prices of things, we’d feel like it’s something normal.”
“He is arrogant because he isn’t the one who is getting a basic pay of RM1,500.”
“For those who want to apply for increments, you can send this video to your managers. ‘Haiya, asking for an increment of RM1,000, it’s cheap lah!‘.”
Basically, people believe that, if entrepreneurs really feel like things are cheap, then perhaps they can spend their money on paying their employees better wages so that they too can feel like things are cheap.
