Do you know of the fabled story of Mahsuri of Langkawi island? If not, grab some popcorn, and we’ll tell you the story.
Mahsuri was said to be a beautiful woman who lived on the island of Langkawi. Jealous of her beauty, the village chief’s wife spread rumours that Mahsuri had committed adultery, leading to Mahsuri’s execution.
As she is innocent, the multiple attempts to kill her were unsuccessful until she asked them to stab her with her family’s keris. This made her bleed white blood, which symbolises her innocence. When she was dying, she cursed the island of Langkawi to have bad luck for 7 generations.
Currently, Mahsuri’s tomb is a tourist attraction on the island. And recently, the alleged 7th generation descendant of Mahsuri visited the island with her son, (who would technically be the 8th generation descendant).
According to an Instagram post by Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz, who is the princess of Kedah, Wan Aishah Wan Nawawi, the 7th generation descendant of Mahsuri who also goes by her Thai name Sirintra Yayee or Nong May, has visited Langkawi island.
“It was my pleasure to meet Mdm Wan Aishah Wan Nawawi, the seventh generation of Mahsuri, again. The legendary lady whose story is forever linked with the history of Langkawi.”
The princess added that Wan Aishah, who is currently based in Phuket, Thailand was on vacation with her husband and son in Langkawi.
Her Royal Highness also reminisced about the last time they met in 2007 and said she would love to meet her again.
Other than meeting with the princess, Wan Aisyah also met with the CEO of the Langkawi Development Authority to have dinner.
While on the island, she visited the Underwater World Langkawi too, where they even made a video to commemorate her visit.

Wan Aisyah is said to have ended the curse of Mahsuri when she was born in 1986. A year later, in 1987, Langkawi had achieved its status as a duty-free island which led to an influx of tourists and became a commercially successful island thereafter.
This is undoubtedly very enlightening!
