Malaysian student activist group, Suara Mahasiswa UMS, today raised a few eyebrows at the conclusion of its “Gempur Rasuah Sabah 2.0” rally in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, by burning a banner featuring a caricature of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

In a series of photos posted to its Facebook page, the banner with Anwar’s caricature can be seen being set on fire with a message reading, “MADANI protector of Sabah corruption”.

According to another post by the student activist group, the gathering today was the second day of the “Gempur Rasuah Sabah 2.0” rally, which is a play on the GRS acronym of the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah, the coalition of Sabah-based political parties currently helming the Sabah State Government.

The rally was aimed at the corruption scandal involving several assemblypersons in Sabah, as well as the appointment of Tun Datuk Seri Panglima Musa Aman as the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sabah.

In a media statement, the Suara Mahasiswa UMS secretariat said that the controlled burning of the Prime Minister’s caricature with the “MADANI protector of Sabah corruption” is the final symbolic act of the rally.

The secretariat added that the rally is a historic moment, with the biggest message of the protest being the strong criticism of the MADANI Government’s leadership, which they dubbed as “hypocritical” toward its promises of institutional reforms and fighting corruption.

The student activists also assured that they had taken responsibility by thoroughly cleaning the location and collecting all the trash, ensuring that it was clean before they left.
