The recent days has seen the arrest of former prime minister Najib Razak where he claimed trial to three counts of criminal breach of trust and another charge of abuse of power, all of which he pleaded not guilty.
Attorney-General Tommy Thomas had initially set bail for Najib at RM4 million, to which the client’s defence lawyer Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, said was too high.
It was later decided by High Court judge Datuk Mohd Sofian Abd Razak, that the bail be brought down to RM1 million, where half of it was paid in cash yesterday (July 4) by Najib’s children, and the other half to be paid next Monday (July 9).
Today (July 5), a group of Najib supporters launched a donation campaign to fund Najib’s legal defence at 2pm, calling it “Solidariti Bersama Datuk Najib”.
They said all supporters of Najib can donate to the campaign, which was launched at his house at Langgak Duta, Kuala Lumpur, reported The Star.
“We want to give moral and financial support to Datuk Seri Najib,” said its spokesman Datuk Mohd Razlan Mohamad Rafii, who was the former Federal Territories Umno Youth chief.
“However, Najib can only pay RM500,000 and to fund the balance, he has to surrender his house title deed as security.”
“We therefore want to offer our moral and financial support to him.”
It is unknown how much Najib will be paying in legal fees, but lawyers say that the case will likely last 18 to 24 months, and can be longer if there were interlocutory applications in between.
