Most of us know people who went to Singapore to work as the conversion rate is three to one.
One Malaysian man was scheduled to work in Singapore starting July 2021. In order to prepare for his brand new life, he was looking around for rooms to rent. He came across a post about a room to rent near the Khatib MRT station and was very interested. However, the room had already been rented to someone else, reported Shin Min Daily News. The landlord then told the man that they have another room he could rent. It’s partitioned and including utilities, it costs $550 (RM1,705) per month.
The prospective tenant then asked for a picture of the “room” and this is what the landlord sent.
It is without a doubt that the Malaysian was shocked. The “room” looks like it can only fit a single bed, not even a super single bed and there will barely be any room to move around. Coming with a cutthroat price of $550, many netizens have since said that the landlord is greedy and some even revealed that what they are doing is considered illegal.
According to the Singaporean government’s terms and conditions to renting out HDB rooms, landlords who wish to rent out their rooms can only do so with rooms that are built as bedrooms. They can be penalised by having their rights to rent out rooms revoked.
We certainly hope that the Malaysian man will be able to look for accommodation in Singapore soon. What is your opinion on this matter? Let us know in the comments!
