A group of youngsters who were participating in a lion dance performance in conjunction with Chinese New Year fell into a large hole when the sidewalk of a shop on Jalan Bunga, Sabah, suddenly collapsed under them.

According to a report by Harian Metro, the incident took place at 11am on Wednesday (February 5), causing 3 of the lion dancers to fall into a 1-metre-deep hole.

An officer of the Tuaran MP’s service centre, 45-year-old Rayner Ebi, shared that the unexpected collapse of the sidewalk shocked the public who were watching the group’s lion dance performance.

“The incident is a clear reminder of the importance of maintaining the basic facilities in the town area that should be carried out by the local authorities immediately,”

“The issue with the shop’s problematic sidewalk has been reported to the Tuaran District Council for safety measures before this incident. However, misfortune cannot be predicted. The sidewalk of the shop collapsed while the lion dance performance was taking place at the location,” he said.

Thankfully, the performers were quickly rescued by their fellow lion dancers.

Rayner has since called for immediate action from the local authorities, especially the Tuaran District Council, to ensure the safety of the people.

He also urged pedestrians to be careful when passing through this particular area due to the potential dangers of more sidewalk collapses.
