One of the things that many Malaysians have experience is having a domestic helper to help with household chores. Unfortunately, there have been cases where the helpers are not treated with kindness and just recently, a Malaysian has decided to share her experience with her wonderful helper.

In her post she said,

“Can’t believe our helper has spent 3 birthdays with us. To the public, she’s just a helper, but to us, she’s like family. I know for a fact that our lives wouldn’t be so easy without her. She knows where everything is placed, and she knows our kids more than my husband and I.”

She then mentioned that when her kids were young, they would bully their helper, but she would always tell her kids that their helper also has family back home and the only reason she’s working in their house is because she needs the money. Thankfully, her kids were good and started treating her with respect.

Heartbreaking incidents

“I remember when I brought my family out for food, we saw another family who also brought their helper out. While they were eating, they made their helper stand under the tree opposite the restaurant. There was another incident where they were at a stall having nasi lemak with fried chicken. We saw a man ordering a plate of nasi lemak with fried chicken for his helper, but the helper was hesitant to eat it”, she said.

She continued her story saying that when the man’s wife realised that he has ordered food for the maid, she yelled at her husband.

Just a few bad apples in a box filled with good apples

“I don’t know why they need to go to that extent. We’ve also had bad experiences, we’ve also had helpers who stole our things, who ran away. We even had experiences where they would create groups just to bad mouth us”, she said.

She said that there would be times where it doesn’t work out for both parties but as long as you treat them like how you want to be treated, it’s enough.

She then ended the post saying,

“I really hope everyone would put their bad experiences aside and don’t let it dictate how you treat the next helper. As long as you continue to treat people with kindness, the universe will reward you with something better.”

Thank you for sharing your story, Grace. We are happy to see that there are still kind people out there who don’t take anyone for granted.
