Following accusations that a lot of Bangladeshis were given MyKads ahead of the 15th General Election (GE15) set to take place on 19 November, the National Registration Department (JPN) has lodged a police report regarding the matter.
The basis of the allegation was a picture of a MyKad bearing the photo of a man, claimed to be a Bangladeshi, with a Chinese name said JPN.
In a statement on Facebook, JPN said that the lies are damaging its image and credibility while causing doubts among the public and emphasised that MyKad is only issued to eligible Malaysian citizens based on the provisions of the law.
The truth, however, is that the man in the MyKad is a legitimate Malaysian citizen who was legally adopted by a Chinese family since birth.
“In fact this issue has been reported by the media who explained that the individual is a Malaysian citizen.”
They also reminded the public to always check the information they receive, as legal action may be taken against those found to be spreading false information.
The accusation is not new, as it became a hot topic in the previous election.
It has also been reported that some groups of Bangladeshi workers have actually indeed admitted that they were given identification cards by the Malaysian government and liked marrying local Malay women so they could enjoy other benefits as well.
Whatever the case, we hope that the public verifies whether or not the information is legitimate before sharing or spreading it even more.
