The Menteri Besar (MB) of Johor, Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi recently made a surprise spot check at the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) complex in Johor Bharu to check on the operational efficiency of the state’s main border checkpoint to Singapore.

A video of the visit has since gone viral on social media, with Onn Hafiz seen being stern towards the Immigration Department officers there for the lack of operational efficiency.

The surprise spot check took place on Wednesday (19 April 2023) and in a TikTok video posted by @JDT01Unite, the Johor MB can be seen being disappointed at the lack of lanes being opened at the Johor Bahru checkpoint.

He can then be seen speaking to an individual, believed to be the person in charge of the border checkpoint for that day. Onn Hafiz said to the person that whatever technical issues they face, YB Fazli Mohamad Saleh, the Johor State Exco of Works, Transport and Infrastructure would sort it out.

The Johor MB then iterated to the man,

“You have to sort out your human resource. Cannot. This has been going on for too long. Rotation lah, praying lah. I’m here, I’m going to wait until it’s settled.”

“Cannot. The ones that are suffering from this are the rakyat. It’s not fair to them.”

Following the visit, Onn Hafiz asserted that he was dismayed at the low operational efficiency at JB’s checkpoint ahead of the Hari Raya Aidilfitri festive season.

As reported by the Malay Mail, the Johor MB said that non-operational passport control counters, lack of staff and technical system problems were among the issues that needed immediate attention.
