Harith Iskander recently made a remark about “Ham Sap Kopi” and capitalised the alphabets H-A-M, prompting some Malaysians to lodge police reports against the comedian for being insensitive. As of yesterday (January 22), PDRM, in a statement, revealed that they have received 3 reports regarding the matter.

The Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) is well aware of the matter and in a statement this morning (January 23), JAKIM said Harith Iskander will be summoned to clarify his “Ham Sap Kopi” joke which has been accused of “making space for others to ridicule Islam.”

JAKIM added that they have also lodged a police report against Harith for causing unease among Muslims. Additionally, JAKIM director-general Datuk Dr Sirajuddin Suhaimee confirmed that the organisation is collaborating with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to address the issue.

“Everyone is urged to remain calm and allow the authorities to carry out their investigation.”

“JAKIM will never compromise on any actions that ridicule Islamic teachings or offend the sensitivities of Muslims.”

Dr Sirajudin also stated that everyone must respect the position of Islam as the religion of the Federation, as stated in the Constitution. However, this should not be a reason for the community to avoid living harmoniously in a multicultural and multi-religious society.

As of the time of writing, Harith has yet to respond to the matter.

Earlier, the comedian found himself under fire for mocking the HAM word in the coffee menu by saying he was confused and had his faith shattered by the word, which you can see on his Facebook post.

In the meantime, another Facebook user also took the opportunity to capitalise the alphabets H-A-M in the name of the Prophet Muhammad, angering many social media users. A Malaysian comedian also revealed that he had lodged a police report against Harith and the Facebook user.
