One of the things Malaysia, as a tropical country, is known for is our year-round “summer”.
It is a double-edged sword for tourists who are used to the 4-season climate because on one hand, the unlimited warm weather is a welcome escape from colder seasons but on the other hand, many may struggle to adapt to the heat and humidity.
Even Malaysians find the heat too much at times and apparently, that is one of the reasons why shopping malls in Malaysia thrive!
In a TikTok video by American expatriate, @lilithinkl (Lilith), she talks about a mind-blowing discovery she made about malls in Malaysia.
Apparently, malls in America are suffering because no one really does their shopping in person anymore. But here in Malaysia, there is a new mall being opened almost every few months!
“In America right now, malls are suffering because of online shopping. No one really goes to malls anymore. They still exist, but a lot of the stores are closed down and there is nothing in them. And the stores that are there, (business) is very slow,” she said.
“But here in Malaysia, they are EVERYWHERE and I’m just like, ‘How have they survived?’ And now I know the answer- it’s the heat!”
A one-stop centre
In the comments, Malaysians shared their thoughts on why shopping malls in Malaysia are so successful.
They agreed that shopping malls are a great shelter for when the weather is unfavourable because the air conditioning is “free”.
Many netizens also shared that malls are a one-stop centre for Malaysians to hang out.
“We go to malls not just to shop. We go there to eat, meet friends, play games, go bowling, watch movies people or just to jalan-jalan (hang around).”
Local artists who make shopping malls their concert tour stops also add to their appeal.
It is interesting that malls play such a big role in our social life here in Malaysia because in America, most businesses such as restaurants, cinemas and clothing brands have their own buildings. This makes outings at these places less attractive as it is less convenient to do multiple activities.
