Handmade gifts are gifts that come from the heart and convey what a person feels to the recipient.
According to Assisi Hospice Singapore on their Facebook page, their Day Care patient, 76-year-old pancreatic cancer patient Michael Lee made his first handmade gift to his wife.
It is said that he joined the hospice’s leather interest group in 2022 and decided to make a leather bag for his wife of 48 years.
“She would just take a plastic bag to carry things when she went out, so I wanted to make her something that is attractive, durable and practical.”
For 2 months, he worked on the bag carefully 2-3 times a week, cutting, punching holes and stitching the leather with precision and help from a therapy aide.
However, this could be his first and last handmade bag for his wife as it takes a lot of strength to stitch leather bags.
“You need a lot of strength to pull tight when you hand stitch the bag, so that it will be durable. I may not have strength to make another one. I hope that she can keep this bag as a remembrance.”
During the process, he was hospitalized for a while but he managed to finish his masterpiece by Christmas and gifted the tote bag to his wife.
When presented with the bag the missus was surprised and overjoyed but she did not forget to thank her husband for his efforts.
We certainly hope that the couple will spend their days in joy and love!
