Politicians will promise you a lot of things. Whether they keep the promises or not, it’s for the people to find out. Now, when it comes to “Win today, cheaper fuel prices tomorrow,” does it ring any bell?

In case you missed the train, Prime Minister Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim used to promise Malaysians that if he was elected the PM, the 1st thing he would do was to bring down the gas prices. According to PMX, that was said all the way back in 2008.

In a recent speech, he told Malaysians that it doesn’t make sense to relate the cost today, in 2024 to something he said 16 years ago.

According to him, the fuel-related promises would be kept if he was elected PM because the gas price was higher in 2008.

“Today, it’s RM2.05 per liter. In the UAE, it’s RM2.95 per liter. You can only get cheap fuel in Brunei. The cost is higher. How can you relate the costs in 2008 and 2024? That’s basic economics,” Anwar said.

During the speech, PMX also highlighted the recently launched targeted subsidy on diesel, which, to him, the matter has been discussed for 25 long years, including when PMX was the finance minister.

“The targeted subsidy was not done back then because it wasn’t easy, and it was also tied to political survival.”
