The second edition of the Asian Para-Karate Championships took place in Melaka recently, as part of the 2023 Asian Karate Federation (AKF) Senior Championships.
One of the highlights of the Championships has got to be the match between Farzad Safari, representing Iran against his opponent from Saudi Arabia for the gold medal.
Farzad Safari won the match against his Saudi opponent and sealed the Iranian contingent’s team title win in the championships.
However, it was what happened at the end of the match that truly captured the hearts and minds of spectators, as in a gesture of altruism and sportsmanship, the Para-Karate athlete went over to his opponent to celebrate together.
The heartwarming video has since gone viral including making it to the top page of Reddit when posted in the r/HumanBeingBros subreddit. You can watch the video here:
Many were touched by the sincerity and genuine kindness of the para-athlete despite his mental developmental disability.
In the video, Farzad Safari can be seen going towards his defeated opponent when the match was called in his favour and raising his hand to show that his Saudi counterpart is a winner too.
Farzad Safari then hugged his opponent and both took a photo together with their hands raised victoriously.
Here’s another angle of the celebration recorded from the viewpoint of a spectator:
The championships concluded on 23 July and were held in Malaysia and was held at the Melaka International Trade Centre in Melaka.
The AKF Senior Championships saw a total of 388 karate practitioners from 32 countries, including India, Iran, Japan, Kazakhstan, Malaysia and Thailand compete in the 3-day tournament.
What a wholesome video! Both Para-Karate athletes showed us what sportsmanship truly means and we hope that they continue to find success and have fun in the ring <3
