The Royal Malaysia Police’s (PDRM) Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department recently shared an informative video that every Malaysian road user should know about.
The video, presented by Lance Corporal Normala binti Adnan, details the proper procedures to take when you’re involved in a road accident in our country.
In the intro, the video shared general tips on what to do when an accident happened. Many road users immediately disembarked from their vehicles to see the damage to their vehicles and discuss it with the other party while at the scene.
PDRM elaborated that the action of refusing to move their vehicles after minimal damage following an accident may cause traffic congestion for other road users.
However, should it be a serious accident involving death(s) or heavy damage to vehicles causing them to be immobile, victims are advised to stay at a safe location until assistance arrives from the relevant parties.
PDRM stressed that the most important thing is to ensure your own safety as unlike vehicles, lives are irreplaceable.
Afterwards, the video details the proper procedure for what to do when you’re involved in an accident, which is as below:
- Jot down the date, time and location of the accident. If the accident took place at an expressway, try to find the nearest kilometre signage of the location. If it happened on a public road, take note of the road’s name or its surrounding landmarks or the location’s coordinate on Google Maps
- Jot down all the vehicles involved’s plate numbers and models, as well as take a photo or video of the scene of the accident before moving the vehicles to a safer location. This is for evidence to help the police to conduct the investigation
- Lodge a police report within 24 hours of the accident at the nearest police or traffic police stations. If you suffered injuries from the accident, seek treatment first as you are allowed to make a police report past the 24-hour mark after you have recovered. If you suffered from serious injuries and can’t physically make a police report, your nearest kin can do it on your behalf
- Bring the lodged police report for the relevant insurance claims
