“To hand over and let go”

For those who don’t know, Mowea Sarapu literally means “to hand over and let go,” which is a traditional ceremony used to resolve marital conflicts caused by infidelity, with both parties’ agreement.

According to Serambi News, the Mowea Sarapu ceremony involves:

  • Traditional and community leaders
  • Families from both sides
  • The couple in conflict

During the ceremony, participants sit together, offer apologies, transfer responsibilities, and close the conflict with symbols of peace.

The husband’s decision to willingly let go of his wife was a choice to maintain dignity and resolve the conflict peacefully.

The incident took place on 20 September in Puudombi Village, North Tongauna District, Konawe Regency, where the husband remained composed and respected the traditional ceremony in front of community leaders and the families of both sides.

Under the Mowea Sarapu process, the wife’s lover was required to fulfil several agreed-upon conditions, including handing over a cow in place of a buffalo and paying IDR5,000,000 (~RM1,270) in cash.

“I’m handing her over, whom I have divorced. Take care of her. Never hurt her. All this time, she was never happy with me,” said the husband.
